Hey, my name is Tivadar. I am interested in many technical things, related to STEM, but also like traveling, hiking, language learning and much more. My plan is to populate my website with content related to those interests, that could also be interesting/helpful/insightful to others. I am not great at writing, so let’s see how far that goes.

The inspiration to make my own website comes from the Web Revival/Small Web/Old Web movement. In my understanding that is a conscious shift from the current - mostly centralized - state of web to a more decentralized and chaotic version.

How to ssh into your home server without it being connected to the router?

Have you ever been in a situation that you have a home server that has Ubuntu Server 24 and ssh running but is not connected to your router and you don’t have a keyboard and screen at hand to interact with it?

Well it is not a very common scenario but it is what I encountered recently. I have a mini PC home server that was not connected to the home wifi yet and I didn’t have an ethernet cable coming from the router to connect it to the network. Neither did I have a USB keyboard and screen to interact with it. All I had at had was my laptop and an ethernet cable. I assumed that should be enough to connect the two computers and be able to use ssh.

The solution actually made it possible to even share internet from my laptop to the mini PC through the ethernet cable.

How does flex memory mode compare to dual-channel mode?

Recently, I bought a used Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen3 laptop with 24 GB RAM in it. 24 GB is an unusual amount of memory to have because it is not a power of two. I assumed that there is an 8 GB soldered and a 16 GB replaceable memory stick in the laptop. I didn’t think much of it at the time of buying, I was just happy to have more RAM (in the end 24 > 16).

However when I already had the machine for a few weeks, I wondered, would it be better to have just 16 GB of RAM but have it run in dual-channel mode?

Moving back to Hungary from China

It’s been a long time since I haven’t posted here, so I will make a short update here. I moved back to Europe, Hungary this month, so I want to write about some of the reverse culture shocks I experienced, the things that were new to me, OpenStreetMap and my planning of the Camino de Santiago.

One month of Youtube

As a first post I thought to share my Youtube watching experiences from last month. To be honest I think 80% of it is thrash looking at it in retrospect, but there are definitely some that I find invaluable. I will mostly cover Youtube videos from content creaters that I follow, not just randomly clicked on from my feed.
